Milan Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2021 marked a return of the runway shows after COVID-19 lockdown for some fashion designers. Although digital, one of the most anticipated shows during MFW SS21 was the debut collection of Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons for Prada. We were all curious to see how the two strong creative directors would work together. And the result is quite spectacular, as you will see in our video.
Several trends have arisen from MFW S/S21 so far. Amidst physical runway shows, live streaming and films, the mood of the collections seen in Milan is relaxed; simplicity and easy-to-move silhouettes are the main post-pandemic trends. Miuccia Prada & Raf Simons
Miuccia Prada & Raf Simons created seemingly simple lines for their signature uniform dressing. The looks of their first collaboration are mainly in white, black, grey and muted pastel colours. By the way, we see this colour palette in most MFW SS21 collections. These essential hues are paired with comfortable silhouettes, resulting in an approachable fashion for real people.
Fendi and MFW SS21
As for Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons, Milan Fashion Week SS21 is also a turning point for the Italian Fendi. MFW SS21 marks Fendi’s last women’s collection headed by Silvia Venturini Fendi. The fashion designer Kim Jones will replace her as artistic director for womenswear for the Italian house, while Venturini Fendi will continue responsible for Fendi’s accessories and menswear. For her last collection at MFW 2021, Fendi uses romantic Broderie Anglaise and “artisanal linen that is good for the moment because it’s totally sustainable”, she explained. The looks are timeless, and the slouch suits exude the relaxed self-confidence of strong women.
Viva l’Italia
Many fashion houses and designers, including Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons, celebrate Italy and the Italian craftsmanship at MFW SS21, using, for example, lace and leather.
Dolce & Gabbana staged a fabulous live runway show inspired in Sicily’s patchwork and the country’s handmade heritage. The looks of the Italian house for spring/summer are colourful and ooze optimist, just what we need right now!
Patchwork is also present at Max Mara, in addition to vests, parkas, trench coats and perfectly-cut suits. Max Mara spring 2021 comes in voluminous silhouettes that are both utilitarian and chic. Statement sleeves that look like capes give a feel of Italian Renaissance to the collection.
Etro also found inspiration in Italy’s history and culture and nautical elements.
All in all, we loved the debut of Prada & Raf Simons, and we think MFW SS21 is an ode to simplicity. To sum up, we will wear essential pieces next spring and summer, relaxed and spontaneous looks that are both timeless and absolutely contemporary.
