Cannes 2019 best dressed

Although the Oscars may be the most famous film festival, Cannes is the chicest; the French Riviera is with no doubt, more glamorous than Hollywood, and the red carpet at the star-studded independent film festival is a sartorial tour de force and a great source of fashion inspiration. Have a look here at the most memorable moments of the festival since it was founded, in 1946.

This year, the 72nd Cannes runs from the 14th till the 25th of May. We went through all the looks so far and selected the ones we liked the most, and some that we found, well, not that good:

Elle Fanning

One of the festival’s jurors, Elle Fanning was flawless in each appearance and by far, the best dressed in Cannes. She looked wonderful for the screening of Les Misérables, in a romantic and voluminous floral dress with statement sleeves by Valentino, Chopard jewellery and flowers in her braided hairdo. The stunning peach gown by Gucci with a purple flower at the waist was worn with a sleek bun, scarlet lips and gorgeous Chopard statement earrings with almost 40 carats of pear-shaped diamonds. Fanning also wore a black skirt and sheer off-white blouse by Dior Haute Couture for the photocall for Jury; she looked polished, super chic and cool. Kudos to her stylist, Samantha McMillen!

Julianne Moore

Elegant as always, the red-headed actress wore a Dior emerald green off-the-shoulder dress with sheer sleeves that flowed down like a train. She paired the gown with stunning emerald and diamond earrings by Chopard. The black Louis Vuitton outfit with zipped up leather caped shoulders embellished with white pattern looked modern and chic.

Carla Bruni

The former French First Lady wore a sleek one-shoulder blue gown by Celine that she paired with beautiful Bulgari earrings, bracelet and ring.

Tilda Swinton

As usual, the British actress turned heads in an elegant yet edgy look. I loved her floor-long metallic custom-dress by Haider Ackerman that reminded me of a knight’s mesh.

Barbara Meier

The Ziad Nakad dress the German model wore for the première for “The Dead Don’t Die”, was fit for a Golden Age Hollywood diva; the sparkling belted gown embellished with feathers on the shoulders, hems and long trail, looked spectacular.

What’s with the legs?

Since Angeline Jolie’s weird pose to show off her leg through the split of her Versace dress at the Oscars 2012, which became an instant joke on Twitter and a meme, actresses and models have done this same “Hey-look-at-me-look-at-my-leg-look-at-me” leg pose on the red carpet. Seriously ladies, quit that. Esthetically speaking, these thigh-high slits look odd.

I mean, look at Amber Heard, for example, her sequin gown with long sleeves and a massive belt, that gave her outfit a nice modern touch, looked as if there were missing a bit of skirt. Alessandra Ambrosio, Victoria’s Secret Model, wore a Ralph and Russo one-shoulder dress embellished with crystals and feathers that could have looked fabulous, had they finished sewing the bottom part. And what’s happened to the cute Selena Gomez? The heavy makeup paired with the Louis Vuitton cropped top and belted white skirt that was too tight and not flattering looked tacky; not even the stunning Bulgari necklace was able to save her look.
